As you begin setting up a classroom, you will need some bulletin board ideas for math areas of your room.  I think it is important not to make your classroom too busy so students can find what they need.   In addition, I believe it is important to keep your posters grouped by subject as much as possible.  This way, students know where to locate the tools and resources they need to complete assignments.  I have created a list of must-have math bulletin board displays teachers should have in their classrooms.

Keeping students engaged throughout the school day can be difficult.   When setting up your classroom, you need to think about many elements to have an efficient and engaging classroom.

Ideas for Math Bulletin Boards

When setting up your classroom, it’s essential to make sure you have a numeracy-rich environment and a literacy-rich one. For example, we need to include word walls, anchor charts, number lines, and reference charts for both subject areas to support students. In addition, your classroom should be a happy and positive space for students to learn and grow.  

Math Word Wall Bulletin Board

Throughout the school year, you should have a space to write or hang up math words after you teach them.   Words can be organized alphabetically, by domain, or by topic.  This provides students a reference when they are talking or writing about math.   The more we encourage students to use the word wall, the more students will be able to use precise language when talking about 

In addition, using a space in the classroom to write the daily math talk encourages students to use math vocabulary. This could be a whiteboard or chart paper. Throughout the lesson, a student could record the math words.

Games & Math Puzzles for Fun

Talking, playing, and solving math throughout the day- not just during math class builds number sense and the love of mathematics. In addition, having a fun bulletin board with games and puzzles allows students to see math as fun.  

Having students do fun Math Puzzles or other engaging activities helps build a positive attitude towards math.  You can sign up to receive 71 Math Puzzles to try out HERE. These are great for warm-up, whole class, small group, or independent work.   You can print and put the puzzles up on a bulletin board.  Then, have strips of paper for students to write down their answers.  It is a great early-finisher activity.

A growth-oriented classroom focuses on growth over grades and progress over performance. Students and their potential are viewed through the lens of growth and modeling a growth mindset. 

In addition to teaching lessons, think of ways you can embed these messages within the classroom decor and environment. 

Problem Solving in Math Steps

Teaching students 4 steps for solving problems allows them to have a process for unpacking complex problems.  As you teach, model the process of using these 4 steps to solve problems.   Then, encourage students to use these steps as they solve problems.

The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators should seek to develop in their students at all levels. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” with longstanding importance in mathematics education. 

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4 Model with mathematics.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP6 Attend to precision.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP7 Look for and make use of structure.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Student’s Growth Mindset Work 

Having a place to showcase students’ progress and growth is essential.   This should not just display students’ best work but the work where they persevered and overcame a challenge.  Students need to see that making mistakes is part of learning. 

At the beginning of the year, it is vital to build relationships and to get to know your students.  This Free All About Me Using Numbers activity can be displayed on a beginning-of-the-year bulletin board.
